British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
