The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
