Seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for targeting locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
